After the success of this summer’s visit to Shropshire, many of our children and young people asked to go back again. So, from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th September, we visited Shropshire on a residential weekend at Quinta Christian House.

After a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day, we left for a nature walk near Chirk. On the Llangollen canal, we saw lots of wildlife before challenging everyone to walk through this canal tunnel. We were all very proud of all the children and young people who took it in their stride!

We also took part in a number of team building survival activities to challenge the children and help them in learning new skills.

After lunch, we hosted a workshop on the ‘positives of health and hygiene’ as part of the Five Outcomes from the government’s Every Child Matters scheme.
They were also invited to take part in sports activities such as football, skateboarding, volleyball and disc golf. ‘Growing up and making decisions’ formed a discussion during out next workshop, as well as ‘personal relationships’ where the children and young people were given the opportunity to involve themselves in an open discussion with their peers and staff.
Just before bed, we got cosy with our blankets and sleeping bags to watch a movie with popcorn!

Sunday morning started with another hearty breakfast before we started our first workshop; ‘money, budgeting and saving’ to ensure that once our children and young people leave care, they feel prepared to manage their finances.

Afterwards, we headed back to the British Ironworks Museum near Oswestry. We have been welcomed back here after our last visit, where we made lots of friends with the staff there!

The museum has always proven a popular option for our group as it has lots of open outdoor space, as well as a learning opportunity; the Knife Angel brings to light just how bad knife crime and violence is within the UK and how something needs to change before it’s too late.

We arrived back at Freedom Fostering HQ at around 4:00pm Sunday, with lots of stories to tell and happy faces. Thank you to everyone who helped contribute towards the success of the weekend.
