What’s On in Wolverhampton & the Black Country | July 2022

Welcome to July’s edition of What’s On in Wolverhampton & the Black Country. This edition features lots of festivals, holiday clubs and carnivals for you and your family to enjoy this summer. If you do participate in any of these events, please let us know, we’d love to hear from you!

Music Festival

Kingswood Trust’s Music Festival will be a great event to start your kids off on their school holidays this summer. Pitch your tent or park your camper van on their 9 acre site, bring some games, explore the woods and eat delicious food outside on their lovely park. There will be family Olympics on Friday night, fun and games on Saturday morning and music on Saturday afternoon. Hot and cold food, drinks and ice creams can be purchased on the day along with souvenirs and snacks. There is also a bar and you can book bacon baps and other breakfast items whilst on site.

SciFest is the University of Wolverhampton’s 2 day STEM festival. This is an annual event to inspire young people to take an interest in STEM education. There will be lots of immersive and interactive activities for the children to get involved in on both days. Some of the workshops include: Robot Chef, where you get to control a robot using AR (augmented reality) to cook a meal in the kitchen, Rocket Cars, where you will learn how aerodynamics and friction work, and Earth Show where you learn all about how Earth works, from understanding the water cycle, to learning about tectonic plates.

Halesowen Carnival

Halesowen’s Carnival will be a fun day out for all of your family including your dog as they can enter the dog show! Meanwhile, weatherman Des Colman will be performing live with his swing band, and there will be many other live music performances throughout the day. There will be plenty of food and drink, with fairground rides for the children and over 50 stalls to shop from.

Date and time: Saturday 2nd July, 12 – 8pm. Location: Halesowen Carnival & Music Festival, Highfield Lane, Halesowen, B63 4SG. Price: FREE.

Summer Holiday Club

Kingswood Trust are hosting a 6 day summer holiday club for your children to participate in. Each day their are lots of different activities, so you can book everyday if you want to. Children will have the day to explore the woodland, make a camp, build dens, make things using natural materials, meet and feed the sheep, collect the eggs from the ducks and chickens, play games, learn how to garden and have fun in the great outdoors and much more. There will be opportunities for archery, orienteering and many more team games. This is a brilliant opportunity for your children to make new friends and gain confidence and independence over the summer holidays. This holiday club is appropriate for ages 5-12.

Art Play Takeover Day

Art Play is taking over Wolverhampton Art Gallery for a fun creative and sensory day for toddlers and babies. This will be an opportunity for your little ones to meet other kids and have some fun exploring their creativity!

Date and time: 24th July, 11am – 12:45pm, or 1:15pm – 3:00pm. These sessions will repeat again on 21st August 2022. Location: Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Wolverhampton, WV1 1DU. Price: £3 each and adults are FREE.

Christian Festival

Come-Unity in the Park – Summer Festival 2022 is a free multi-cultural Christian Festival which aims to celebrate and connect with their local communities through a vibrant programme of entertainment including leading and talented gospel artistes, comedians and inspirational speakers. The festival will feature:

  • Information stalls
  • Food hub
  • Bouncy castle
  • Inflatable course
  • Children’s games
  • Face painting

Two Car Shows in Wolverhampton

Chillington Car Show

The Chillington Car Show takes place at Chillington Hall and will be a showcase of classic, vintage and modern cars, WWII military vehicles, 4x4s and vintage tractors. This dog-friendly event will feature:

  • Trade stalls
  • Food and drinks
  • Licensed bar with cask ales
  • Live music

Date and time: Sunday 17th July, 11am – 4pm. Location: Chillington Hall, Codsall Wood, Wolverhampton, WV8 1RE. Price: Adults are £10, under 12s go FREE. Chillington Hall House will be open from 1 – 3pm. £3 for adults and £1 for children.

Chillington Hall House will also be open for tours at a small extra cost, which would be well worth the visit whilst you’re there! The Georgian house was previously owned by John and Crescent Giffard, and is open on selected days in the summer months for a 45 minute tour. The tour guides will discuss with you the house and family history, the architecture, furnishings and artwork.

Porsche Wolverhampton Car Cafe

The Porsche car show is running in support to raise funds for Midlands Air Ambulance. There will be lots of Porsche supercars on display, with plenty of entertainment and live music to accompany you.

Graisley Old Hall Ghost Hunt

Graisley Old Hall in Wolverhampton is a house with a history of hauntings dating back to the 1300’s. Named by the BBC as ‘The House That Cries’ following a series of unexplained pools of water appearing in the main hall. This strange phenomena has been witnessed on numerous occasions by the owners of the house as well as their bemused visitors.

Poltergeist activity has been experienced whilst a member of the local clergy and his family were in residence at the house, and the activity was reportedly centred around the children of the unsuspecting family.
Your event will include:

  • Tour of the location
  • Use of ghost hunting equipment
  • Vigils in small groups
  • Traditional and modern experiments
  • Beverages throughout the night
  • Opportunity to ghost hunt alone if location permits

The inside of the house

The Wild Play Group

Learn and explore nature with children aged 0-6 years old with messy play, turf trays and mud kitchens where you can make potions and mud pies. There will also be balance beams for your little ones to improve their balance and movement, whilst taking part in other environmental activities.

Date and time: 1st July, 2 – 3pm. Location: Valley Nurseries Garden Centre, 297 Erdington Road, Walsall, WS9 0SB. Price: £6.

Rapunzel at Dudmaston Performance

Dudmaston Estate are hosting a brand new musical adaptation of Rapunzel on their stunning estate! Performed by Immersion Theatre, the production is fast-paced and larger than life, which their audiences have come to love and expect, including a laugh out loud script, heaps of audience interaction, a host of catchy songs, unforgettable characters, and maybe even the odd water gun or two!

With magic and mayhem throughout, this is one hair-raising adventure the family won’t want to miss! This event is suitable for those aged 4 and up. The running time will be approximately 55 minutes for act 1, and 40 minutes for act 2, with a short interval in between.
