Foster carers pay tax, so you will need to register with HMRC – they have special tax arrangements for carers that recognise your role and expenses. If you are on a low income, you may still be able to claim a range of benefits when you are fostering, but this may depend on whether you receive a fee for fostering and how the fee is made up – some high-paying feeds may take you above the threshold for benefits.  If you are worried about this, you should ask us when you first apply.

The Fostering Network‘s website has more information on this, and they also have a range of publications and a helpline to help carers better understand the finances of fostering.
